Strawberry French Toasts…the French way…overnight
4 slices country bread
1 cup milk
1 1/2 ounces sugar
2 ounces butter
1 pound strawberries washed, dried in paper towel and sliced in halves
Toast the bread and place in an oven dish. Mix/beat milk, ½ ounce sugar and eggs. Pour mixture over bread and refrigerate overnight for total absorption and to get right moisture. Breakfast morning: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large frying pan, melt butter with another ½ ounce of sugar and cook the soaked slices of bread until golden on each side. Place slices of bread on an oven rack and arrange strawberry slices. Sprinkle with third ½ ounce of sugar and bake for 4 minutes until berries start melting. Serve immediately. French women like this dessert warm…even in the hot sun of Provence. Miam miam (that’s yummy in French).
