too much tv
Ahh- I watch too much tv! I put my toddler to bed at 8pm, and many nights, plop down in front of the tv for the evening. I record tv shows I want to watch, I sit down and watch one show, then decide, "oh well, just one more"- which turns into 2 1/2 hours. So frustrating. All I have to do it just turn it off, but I get sucked in! At least I can fast forward through commercials- ha.

Good Television
I'm sure the U.S. like many other countries still embrace the relaity tv boom, but I still have hope that there are very creative people in the entrtaiment inndustry that believe in a quality product. Shows like Downtown Abbey, Mad Men and HBO's Game of Thrones, shows me that we have not become a junk food society.annii50

too much tv?
I too feel I watch too much tv. However, I so look forward to when my husband goes to bed at night and I can lie onn the sofa and watch the series "The Office". I bought all the tv series available so far and I love it!!! It makes me laugh out loud. If I have had a bad day or just ready for it to end, I pop in that show and I feel so much better by the time I go to bed. However, except for watching 1 or 2 movies during the weekend this is really all the tv I watch. So I guess it is my own little indulgence, but for some reason I feel guilty watching ant tv at all.MrsHonniB

Upstairs-downstairs
I do the same Annie, I watch DVD boxsets, just an episode or two now and then, TV series have too many commercials all the time for my liking. I love BBC series and when I got the flu last January my kids got this box for me, love it!annii50

Annie
I'm dutch(-; But that's just at the other end of the Channel anyway!! Upstairs-downstairs I've been watching is recorded back in the 70ties I think, but I loved it anyway, especially the details on clothes and the conversations and the way upstairs people and downstairs staff related to eachother back then....Kimberly

I try to balance it.
I posted on here last year about feeling I had watched too much tv each day. Now I try to balance what I watch. I don't want to get caught up in reality shows. I pick and choose what I watch and put it on the dvr. The programs I watch most often are House Hunters International if they are in Europe, Murder, She Wrote, and cooking. I like recording the shows because then I don't have to watch all of the commercials.bananie67

Update from my original post.
Update from my original post. No more TV for me! We got rid of our cable 3 weeks ago, and I am loving it! We still receive Netflix and Hulu on our TV, but I'm not interested. We've moved the TV to the finished basement, so we rarely use it. My 4 year old used to watch too much TV as well, but not anymore. What a difference- I now have so much time to read, do some research, paint, or even take a nap!AngelaR

I wonder??
I guess I assume that too much tv means awful tv. Like reality shows and nonsence like that. But I do however love to indulge in PBS shows. Right now I am hooked on CreateTV which I think of as quality programming that I could watch a lot of.meneia

Too Much
My tv was on for at least 40 hours a week. Even with quality shows (they weren't) that's too much. I have no problem with sitting down to specifically watch something, even something awful, it was more the tv as a constant companion that was the issue.Ava

TV
It's quite easy to get into the trap of too much TV. For a long while now, I record the programmes or films I am really interested in and watch them at my leisure. That way I can whizz through those dreaded adverts and it means I'm not plonked in front of the TV for longer than necessary!Vintage1944

Relocating
I had to resort to hiding the tv. It is now residing in the wardrobe in my spare room, so it's easy enough to pull out if there is something that I actually want to watch, but I can't just flick it on withought thinking about it.meneia

Progress
So it's been a few weeks now, and I'm fairly used to life with less tv. I still watch some, I just don't watch it mindlessly anymore. One interesting thing, when I first stopped watching it, I would always have the radio or a cd on, but now I've gotten used to it being quiet and don't feel the need to have background noise all the time.Ava

Hi Menia
Isn't real peace and quiet just wonderful? I love it when everyone is out of the apartment. Sometimes I'll put my favourite music on ... loud, and have a bop! But better still, sometimes, when there is no noise at all, I enjoy the absolute tranquility. Bliss :-)Elizabeth G

Good for you, Meneia!
If you don't mind my asking, do you have other family or household members who were affected by your moving the TV? I would so love to reduce the cost and amount of TV consumed in our household, but I've been outvoted. I try to watch less (although there are a few shows I watch faithfully), but it's such an easy, lazy habit when it's right there, centerpiece of the room! Moving it into another room is such a great idea. Were there any shows that you've completely given up? I really love "Project Runway," anything on Masterpiece Theater (although there always seem to be reruns lately), and the sweet mindless entertainment of "Drop Dead Diva."

TV
I don't mind. I actually live alone, so I can pretty much do what I want. My favourite shows were Miranda and Supernatural, but they've just finished the season of those so there's not much on that I particularly want to watch at the moment. Two Australian shows called Spicks and Specks and The Gruen Transfer I enjoy, but they're on Wednesday nights and I'm not usually home.Felisha

So Far TV_Free And I LOVE it!
Since reading this thread all the way through I decided to give myself a challange and not watch tv for a while. And you know what I REALLY like it! I'm able to get so much done. I'm even reading books that I have been trying to get around to reading for years!!!!!! :) Thank you so much everyone for the wonderful tips and tricks on getting off tv! :) I should have done this allot sooner. :)jas

Good for you!
Yeah for turning off the TV and turning on to books. Nature too is the best, incredible help. I often go and sit in my garden and just talk to the plants. They help me a lot with the struggles I am having. JasAlicia

I couldn't agree more!
My husband and I recently downgraded to basic cable due to the expense, but mostly b/c we were wasting so much time watching programs we really had no interest in, it was just something to pass the time. It's been a liberating feeling to be free of all that noise and to be saving money. Proud of all of us who have taken this challenge- I promise it's easier than you think :o)meneia

New Strategy
I watch far too much tv, but have come up with a new strategy that I will be implementing as of this Saturday. I'm going to buy the paper on Saturday morning, so I'll have the tv guide for the week. Then I'll go through and highlight the shows I really want to watch (targeting one per night but some room for flexibility). And then, just switch on the tv to watch the shows I've preselected, and that's it. Then switch it off when they're done. If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to resort to hiding the antenna cable in another room.snorklee

No TV... still...
Hi Meneia, I lost my digital cable provider when I moved last November, 2009. I haven't had TV since. I don't even miss it anymore. Of course, I don't know what anyone is talking about at the office half the time... lol. But, I can't even remember how much time I used to waste, just sitting and vegging in front of it. I don't know if I would have the discipline to turn it off after only one show. I used to sit for hours in front of it.Marilyn

Well done
I must admit I have watched too much rubbish TV over the past 2 months as the weather has been so bad. I do read a lot as well though. We have SKY+ satellite tv (no cable in our corner of the UK) but are considering unsubscribing and just going with the Freeview which is built into the set. Less channels therefore less rubbish. Will have to get OH on the case to cancel it before the next monthly payment goes out!!Vintage1944

Wish I had the discipline...
and of equal weight, the family support. My husband and my teenage son have vigorously outvoted me on the subject. But I can't pretend to be too noble; although I do try to control the garbage-in mentality, there are some fabulous programs on. I would be very sad to have missed "Mad Men" and all the lovely Masterpiece Theater shows. I know they're available on Netflix, etc., but I like watching them when they're current. I also love Project Runway and What Not to Wear, and several cooking programs. I steer clear of the "Real Housewives" shows, to help prevent my mind from turning to mush!meneia

I live alone, so don't have
I live alone, so don't have to worry about anyone elses opinion. I happen to like watching tv too and have no intention of stopping, just making sure that I watch things I actually want to watch rather than mindlessly channel surfing for hours, and I totally agree about how watching things when they're on tv is different from downloading them later. It's like the difference between a song you like coming on the radio or playing it on a cd.miamoki

Wow Snorklee - good for you :)
I'm not sure I could do that though. I am quite the "sports spud" and enjoy watching them on tv. I have however tried - although not every day - I have tried to make dinner time our family time. I turn off the tv, put on some jazz music and light a big candle. DD thinks - uh oh Mom has lost it again.. LOL But I tell her that once in a while, I like to have a quiet family dinner where we just talk about each other's day. It is a struggle making it a habit, so I'm just doing that one day at a time. I figure if I can get it done at least three times a week (during the week M-F) then I am doing really well.Vintage1944
