Portions for stir-fries etc

Hi Everyone, Living in Australia we have a lot of Asian influences on our food (Thai, Japanese, Indian). I was just curious about portion sizes for these dishes? If i make a stirfry at home i usually have a cup worth of the vege/meat/sauce mix and half a cup of rice. I tried half a cup of each but was so hungry i had to go back for seconds. Just wondering what everyone else does? Mireille does not mention these dishes (that i am aware of anyway) in her books/ website so im at a bit of a loss. Looking forward to hearing suggestions. Thanks guys! Bree =)

Portion

Hi Bree, I didn't see your post earlier but according a nutritionist's advice: rice (your simple carbohydrates) should be 1/4 of your plate; vegetables should be 1/2, and protein should be the remaining 1/4. As long as you eyeball your portion with these proportions in mind (and don't serve your dinner on a turkey platter!!) you should be in the range of really healthy eating. It's a little tougher with stir-fry or a casserole - I would guess 1 cup of rice and slightly over 1 cup of veggie/meat/sauce combination would be about right. I find if I serve my stir-fry in a bowl (a wide, flat bowl like a soup bowl) it fills up the edges and visually looks like "more."

i think i found the right balence

Thanks for the reply Elizabeth G! I actually tried 1/2 cup rice and 1 cup vege/meat/sauce mix, which seemed perfect. I served it on a dinner plate 1 of the nights and another night i had it in a bowl and couldnt believe the difference it made! it looked like so much more in the bowl! Thanks again for the reply Elizabeth. Bree

Oops, meant 1/2 cup rice!

But I said "1 cup", above. I'm glad you found the right balance. Isn't amazing what a difference the little tricks can make - serve in a bowl, use a smaller plate, etc? I had a hard time finding small wine glasses than would only serve 4-5 ounces. Everything is giant, goblet-sized, 16-ounce servings these days! I went to a restaurant supply store and although the glasses certainly aren't fine crystal, they're a good classic shape and SMALL.

Wine glasses

I really love those little wine glasses/goblets. I think they are so classic. Might have to go shopping myself and maybe treat myself to 1 (or 2) crystal ones. I'll start saving now ha. Thanks again Elizabeth G Bree

Crystal

You can pick up some reasonabley priced crystal glasses at the larger department stores in the January sales. I'm lucky my mother made sure I had a set and a couple of spares!!
