mais ou-ca?
I live in France so I've been around fairly all of the interesting towns and can give you any tips you want, just ask me anything specifically. :) But which town are you going to live in? (Even the small ones have some great things, for example Grenoble, which is near Lyon, has one of the best fromager (cheese shop) in the whole country.)Laurel61

Are they in relative proximities to transportation such as Metro/Airport? Crain- CHATILLONNAIS- VALLEE DE L'OURCE- Châtillon sur Seine- Coussac Bonneval- Saint Junien- I know there are allot of questions. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. you may e-mail me offline if you wish. cheflaurel at yahoo . comKate

Marie
Hi Marie, We are looking at Magny en Vexin. My husband will be working in Colombes (I think thats how you spell it) so we want to be no further than a 40 min drive or RER ride. I just wish someone would hurry up and buy our house as that is all we are waiting for now. The company are paying for me and husband to have one o one french lessons so hopefully I wont be lost in language for too long :) Do you have any other suggestions for towns within the desired distance. Keep well Kate xxbrownme4

moving to Paris
I have always loved the Gertrude Stein quote by the way, Mette. I am also moving to Paris in August, but I am moving there to go to school. The university will help me find a place to live, but I think I have a little bit of a say in where I actually end up. Marie, do you have any advice for particularly safe/nice arrondissements that I should try to live in or any unsafe ones that I might want to avoid? Merci mille fois!mireille

Paris for student,
Bonjour, The best is to find out where you'll be studying 5th, 6th or 7th probably all safe and wonderful left bank locations (I'm obviously biased living in the 7th and 6th as a student and now in the 6th), but my suggestion would be to try and find something where you can walk to school (or at worse bike or take a bus) preferably in the same arrondissement. It will save you money, subway and many other headaches...and I hope to run across you somewhere this fall. Bonne chance, Mireillebrownme4

moving to Paris
Thank you both for the helpful comments! I really want to do my best to live within walking distance of the university so that I can save money and get in a little bit of extra movement during the day. When I was getting my undergrad degree, I really liked when I had the opportunity to walk to class. I feel like it forced me to wake up a little bit earlier and get my thoughts together for the day instead of rushing into class half awake. My only challenge with walking to class will be to not stop at the patisserie every day on the way! See you in Paris, Mireille! Merci et à bientot!Mette

suggestions
Hi Brownme4: what luck you have in getting to study in Paris! This will be the best thing ever, and you will really enjoy it. As for safe and nice arrondissements to live in, I would suggest the 5th foremost. It is afterall the Latin Quarters and the 'old' student arrondissement. As for not so nice places to live alone, the 13th, 15th arrondissements are not so nice, in my humble opinion. If you don't mind living 30 minutes by RER outside Paris, you will have a LOT more choices. I lived in the town called Antony just south of Paris directly on RER A. It is a wonderful little town, rich on history and easily accesible. Or you can look at the RER-B (toward Disneyland Paris). So many places to chose from. Good luck!! MetteMette

So jealous :)
Congratulations!!!! moving to France, WOW. Well, when I lived in France, I lived in the Marne-la-Vallee area, which is really nice, about 45 minutes by RER into Centre Paris, and close to Disney, which is nice if you have kids. I lived in Bussy St. George, but had friends shattered all over that area. Check it out :) MetteSt.TropezChic

No, I currently live in Nashville, USA. How old is your daughter, and what does she want to study? I will be happy to suggest places, etc, for her, IF I can remember any. It's been about 20 years since I last lived in DK :)Vintage1944

Thanks Jean. It was an experience that I hope my daughters will have one day. In fact, I am planning on taking them to Paris on their 16th birthday, kind of a mother-daughter thing. They are 9 years and 3 years now, so plenty of time :). My husband and I dream of moving back one day, and talk about Paris every day (I kid you not). Like Gertrude Stein said: "America is my country and Paris is my hometown" :). I could write a book of my experiences from Paris. Mmmm, maybe one day :). But for now: any questions, worries, or other concerning moving to, living in Paris, I will be happy to help out.Marilyn

Even more jealous
My OH and I have often toyed with the idea of moving to France but the best time would have been when he retired from HMRC 15 years ago but daughter was 13 and well settled in school getting ready for exams so we unfortunately decided to stay put. Still think about it but in these days of credit crunch combined with losing pension increases if we moved will have to manage with French and Italian holidays. Enjoy your new life.Anna

Magny en Vexin
Hi Jean, We have been looking at properties in Magny en Vexin. It looks a beautiful town. My husband came back from Paris yesterday after his business meeting, to inform me that the company what us to move there as soon as we can. They are going to rent a propety for us for three months to give us some time to do some house hunting. I had the removal company round to quote for furniture removal etc. Its a complete blur that our dream is finally coming true!!! Keep well.Vintage1944
