More Feminine

There is is a movement arising at my workplace to be more feminine. Not sure what is driving it in others, but my experience here is motivating me.We have agreed to wear more dresses and skirts. And when a group of us work on the weekend it will be "Dress up" time.Yesterday,I arrived in a dress.Eyes popped and one of the orderlies said"Didn't know nurses could wear dresses"And another Nurse's husband demanded to know where she was going all dolled up and didn't believe her when she said "Work".LOLThis had caused me to puchase 2 dresses. One black with a modern white pattern(me of I don't wear patterns) and a white on with a design in black on it.And I bought a very simple, luxurious satin slip to wear with the white one.Lovely.Jean

Vintage in very in here

Hi Jean, are you still dressing up at work? We wear scrubs all the time on duty. But I've noticed so many people are into vintage clothing. At my office job I'm trying to incorporate that look, sometimes with an antique pin or accessory. Not allowed to wear jeans at the hospital when we come in on days off, say for a class. Most people just wear their scrubs. Thinking of getting all glammed up,kinda over-the-top you know. Might get some looks. My bunions don't appreciate it, but heels are fun, at least for a while. Scrubs...

Hi Tina, I have to wear scrubs at work too. But at least some of them are vintage. lol. But I have been toying with the idea of gradually switching over to regular tops and pants and wearing a lab coat. I don't know how that will go over though. It's a fine line between appropriate and inappropriate. There are three facilities where I work, and a clinical manager at each one. When I was hired, all three managers were expected to wear scrubs, just like their staff. But a new manager has just been hired for one of the other facilities, and she's wearing regular clothes. I think I will stage a mutiny, and start wearing regular clothes too. The worst that can happen is that they will tell me "no." :)

Stage a mutiny!

You know I've always wondered why nurses wear "uniforms". At the hospital, MDs wear street clothes, some with a lab coat. The therapists, dieticians, managers, actually everyone else wear street clothes. I work with younger co-workers, so a lot of Sponge Bob and Disney themed scrubs. I stick to plain colors or muted designs. It would be nice to be able to dress like the other professionals. Maybe I could swing the pendulum the other way. Dress in white dress uniforms LOL. We used to wear our starched caps, white hose, and uniforms that showed very little leg. I've seen a few nurses on other units wearing those popular(why?)skull/crossbones designed scrubs. Kinda sends the wrong message! Go for it at your job!!:) Tina

Thank Florence Nightingale

and her military background for uniforms. As for those "cutsey "scrub tops, they are very, very unprofessional.Skull/Crossbones I have not seen.Disgusting and certainly the wrong message. Some hospitals in the U.S.A.have stopped allowing those themed scrubs. It was apparent that Nurses were treated with little or no respect when wearing them and were more likely to be assaulted!!They established a uniform code, usually white scrubs and no embellishments. We are professionals and should dress accordingly. In my position I wear the lab coat all the time.It looks professional and protects my clothes, and has great pockets. This is one of my favourite rants.I'll shut up now.LOL.OXO

No, keep talking!!

I so agree, Jean. We wonder at the hospital why nurses get so little respect. Used to be when "the nurse" came into the room, she or he was given attention. Now I have to wave at people after a few minutes of waiting patiently to give them their meds, while they finish up talking or texting on their cel phones. Add a cutesy scrub and as some of my younger co-workers have been heard to say, "here ya go dude!" Maybe I'll think about the lab coat, no nursing uniform ever has enough pockets. XO Tina

Dress uniforms

I've always wanted to wear those little white dresses and hose. Maybe I'll do that instead. lol. And I agree about the skull and crossbone scrubs. I work in Hospice, so you would think no one would wear them there, but they do. Yuck.

You are right, everyone else in healthcare wears regular clothes. Even home care nurses where I work, get to wear their own clothes. It's just in the facilities that we can't. But, I'm going to try and see what happens. I'm a nurse supervisor, but I spend a lot of my day working the floor with my staff, so I'm not sure I feel right dressing in total street clothes. Maybe I can strike a balance. Plain pants and top with lab coat. Now what to do with my big white clunky nurse shoes? lol.

Hi Deb!

You are a very special brand of nurse working in Hospice. Kudos to you for your so-needed, loving care for those on their final journeys. I know it is so,so appreciated by those families. I still have to wear the uniform, but as Jean said, love those lab coats. Good luck with the transition. God bless you...XO Tina

There is...

a young Nurse at my hospital who wears the white dress, hose and shoes. She looks terrific, polished and professional. But I agree with getting out of uniform if at all possible.Sadly,I think forcing us into uniforms puts us low on the food chain and wearing ugly, themed scrubs does not help at all.Oh oh I am ranting again.Sorry.OXO

Rant on!

So aptly put, low on the food chain! We can do better, one person at a time. Maybe I'll try a regular, muted blouse, scrub pants and lab coat. What can they do, send me home!!LOL, hugs, Tina

Clothes/Scrubs/Work

We are trying to be more feminine,at least a few of us.We do not have to wear uniforms/scrubs in Psych. There is a dress code and we have to wear Lab Coats when we leave the Unit, identifying us as Nurses. That is expected of ALL Nurses in the hospital, but few comply. No jeans or open toed shoes, sandals etc.Don't like it in the summer, but it is a wise rule. Many people were dressing very inappropriately, that something had to be done. But instead of dealing directly with those who dressed like they were going clubbing, they hit all of us.I am glad I do not have to look at belly buttons or cleavage(front and back:-)},anymore.As for vintage...I think it is wonderful.I have a collection of vintage brooches that I wear.Have one that was my Granny's,which I love.It was made in Siam (that is what is on the back)and it must be over 100 years old.I limit the jewels at work.Since you do office work you can take it up a notch or two.High heels?Brave woman! That ship has sailed.LOL.Wrecked my left ankle falling off the darned things.Love the look, though. And speaking of vintage, there is a Vintage shop nearby.Wish we could go have a look together.OXO

I'm so with you on this...

I realize psych prefers staff wear street clothes. And I agree with you, sometimes the less seen the better! When you find yourself self-consciously avoiding looking at someone's multiple piercings, cleavage, (yes front and back!)way too tight, short etc clothing--you know it's time to go to simpler times. So of course, your bosses and all bosses punish the entire class. Your brooches sound devine. I have one of my mother-in-law's I just love. Reminds me of her and she was a dear. It's costume but varying sizes of iridescent rhinestones. So yes I am trying to be more the feminista, even in baby steps (in heels) The heels usually last 2 hours, then I slip on the good ole Crocs. Wish we could check out that shop..maybe one day when we are retired!!? XO Tina

I will get to Ottawa someday. I loved Montreal, and I'm a regular in Toronto. Who retires in this day and age? As long as I can find my way to work, I'll be there. :)

Besides, nurses ARE teachers...

Yes we are in the right profession and here in the US anyway, more people are delaying retirement. Too much uncertanity economically :( Used up my vacation time when mom had surgery, but I'll accrue more, though we usually spend it on day trips to visit the kids in San Diego or an occasional "mental health"day (sick call). Ottawa sounds beautiful, don't get much seasonal change in LA. BTW, the post times are off or based on another time zone. It's 7:40pm Pacific time, but it usually posts as much later. Work tomorrow so early turn-in. Sweet dreams! Tina

Retirement...

I won't be retired til I'm 67. 12 long years to go. But at least I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. lol. That's why i'm going back to school. If I have to work 12 more years, I'm going to do what I like. :)

Seriously, though, I work with plenty of nurses who are way past 67, and they still love their job. Old nurses don't retire... they just work night shift.

Oh how I wish that would happen at my job! Even though I work for a law firm, we lean torwards more casual attire, but the women here take it too far. They come to work in flip flops!! (to the office!!)

Envious too!!

I feel the same as you about my horrible office!! I work for a very unfair place. We have to wear black 5 days a week neck to toe. On fridays we can dress down but for a price. You pay £2 and it goes to the charity we support. The resaon i dont dress outside the unifom a lot is i get comments from a particular person I dont want comments from. He's been reported but even so I just dont risk it anymore. So most days of the week, i feel invisible, non feminine and down right frumpy. Its horrible. We work in an office setting where noone sees us and we have to wear the depressing uniform. Its just awful.

That is awful!

And some of that, especially the inappropriate comments must be illegal. Is there anything you can do as a group to make changes?Just a suggestion,to feel feminine, wear your nicest lingere under neath that black, ugly uniform.Nobody but you will know and Mr.Creep will leave you be.OXO

Dreary uniform

Can you not lighten it with a lovely blouse or stylish T, pretty earrings or a necklace. If you wear pretty underwear you will feel good and the obnoxious male will not know. Your own secret, try it. Take care and keep smiling.

Don't worry

Don't worry what other people think. You should dress to please yourself and be bien dans votre peau. You can be professional and feminine without resorting to 'beach' attire, a step too far.

another thought and experience

One of the things this group helped me with was keeping my femininity while working a physical (sort of masculine job). I've done it....Even though I garden and lay rock, chainsaw, dig out large bushes...anything to do with creating gardens. I always have a great bra on (and my breasts look good, even if I do say so myself), usually a form fitting top, long earrings (my style) and makeup...it feels good to keep my femininity!!! People notice some comment, not usually in a mean way, I'm really happy just being me...Jas
