Mireille's Bistro

What's on the menu? Once a month (or so), we can vote on a simple set menu from the FWDGF books / website. Two or three courses with accompanying wine (if desired), and music, candles, perhaps even dress up etc. We can cook the meal on the same day (despite time zones!) Enjoy the preparation; savour the food; discover new music and share our experiences in general. It can be a special FWDGF evening, with perhaps some pre-cooking pampering in the day, then a delicious meal with our virtual sisters at night. We can share our evenings in the forum and discuss what we thought of the food / wine / music etc. Who has ideas for meals? They could be your favourites, or something you've never tried before but like the sound of. If choosing a meat dish, please also select a vegetarian option :-)

Music Selection and a Vegetarian Option

Music Selection: Mozart on the Menu

Vegetarian Option:Baked, Stuffed Eggplants
Ingredients
•2 medium eggplant, (1-pound each
•1/4 cup(s) oil, olive
•pepper, black, freshly ground
•1 medium onion(s), thinly sliced
•1 clove(s) garlic, minced
•1 cup(s) beans, cannellini, cooked or canned
•3 medium tomato(es), plum, diced
•1 teaspoon basil, fresh, chopped
•2 whole sage, leaves, finely chopped
•1/4 cup(s) cheese, Romano, grated

Preparation
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Cut the eggplants in half lengthwise. Make a couple of X's in the flesh of the eggplants for better olive oil penetration.
3. Rub with a little of the olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
4. Place cut side down in a baking dish and bake for 20 minutes.
5. In the meantime, place a skillet over medium-high heat. Add about 3 tablespoons olive oil and the onion. Saute the onion until it becomes golden brown and begins to caramelize, about 15 minutes.
6. Add the garlic and cook 1 minutes longer.
7. Add the cooked beans, diced tomatoes and herbs. Season with salt and pepper. Saute for 2 minutes more, then remove from the heat.
8. When the eggplants have finished baking, turn them over, flesh side up and top with the tomato and bean mixture.
Place them back in the oven and bake for another 10 minutes. 9. Sprinkle with the grated Romano cheese and serve immediately.

Sounds lovely...

Your eggplant and your music selection sound wonderful. There is a symphony of ingredients in your recipe. I can almost hear the music as I read it. :)

Unfortunately

I really dislike pork! I haven't seen any vegetarian suggestions posted as yet (an alternative to the meat for those who do not eat meat or like the meat suggested!) - so I will have a look in the books.

Generally, the idea was for us all to cook the same meal (or vegetarian option), so we could enjoy a 'meal together' and compare our thoughts on the courses and discuss favourites. I'm not sure us all trying regional produce will really work, as we'll all end up with totally different meals! (unless you mean to source local produce to make the same dishes?)

The idea was that we would

The idea was that we would have a base ingredient (say salmon (or a vegetarian option)) and each of us would make our own variation of it using what is native and seasonal to our region. We still have time, so would you like us to make a whole new main course that is vegetarian friendly? Instead of pork chops with the meal, we could have sauteed veggies besides just peppers (like with zucchini and mushrooms and root veggies, &c. to create more substance to compensate for the loss of meat) atop maybe some rice or quinoa or couscous with whatever seasonings you prefer (I really like sauteed veggies and root veggies with thyme), a salad, and then the dessert. It would be a whole new meal than what we originally planned, but it could very well work too. What do you think? Just an idea.

Thanks Leahrose, Jean & Kimberly,

I don't want meat eaters to go without the option of meat! I eat meat - I've just never liked pork - though I like bacon & ham (which is all pig!)

Please do your pork & apples if that's the winning vote and those of us wanting a vegetarian option, can decide on a meal between us.

I like the idea of seasonal dishes - I think they would work well for another time as Jean says.

asking a random question.... very random

how do you get the paragraph breaks in your comments, Ava? I could never figure out how. Whenever i type in an Enter, it never appears in the comment

Ava

Hi Leahrose,

It's difficult to show (as it'll make a break!) So I'll try and explain :-)

You basically have these brackets <> and into them (with no spaces) put BR or br (for break)

Where you want to start a new line put one <> br

Where you want a paragraph do two of them so <> br <> br ...one on each line you want a space on...like so....
<> br
<> br
Usually you would just use <> with a P inside (for paragraph) but there is limited HTML code that you can use on this site. Hope this helps :-) Ava

Let us know.....

what you come up with for the vegetarian option to go with this meal. I am not a vegetarian, but also do not eat pork very often. Since I do eat meat though, I figured I could do it this time. I would also like your ideas for vegetarian options as well. Everyone should be included :)

Sorry on two counts

The pork was my idea and since I won't be able to participate, perhaps you all could choose something else.As for the regional thing,we can perhaps do a meal like that when there is more choice(spring, summer, fall)and compare what's out there.Otherwise, you are right about the idea.Back to the drawing board.LOL.OXO

Sounds delicious!

And sounds like a plan. :) Now... what's the wine? Perhaps a nice, hearty, beaujolais? It will balance the sweetness of the pork and the mildness of the peppers. Although, I always think that beaujolais goes with everything, so if anyone has another idea, I'm open to suggestions. lol.

Dessert plan?? a recipe question & an idea....

is the recipe for those apple pork chops on this website? i couldn't find it, only a basic recipe for pork chops. I think i remember reading about that recipe, but i cant remember where. Anyway, if we did a pork chop recipe, we could do sautéed tricolor peppers (and maybe zucchini, too). For dessert, i dont really know what would work. Pork chops and peppers work great together, but i have no idea what kind of dessert would. Any ideas?? Maybe just some great vanilla ice cream with whatever fruits are in season for where you live?? I just had a great idea: what if, because we all come from different places from around the world, we did something like this: We have a theme (can be a holiday, a region, a certain food(s)) and we all have to make a meal out of what is in season for where we live. For example, if our theme was pork chops, someone from england, or greece, or US (even then, someone from minnesota or someone from hawaii) each person will have a completely different but equally exciting menu to share. That way, we can all get Mireille's influence from different parts of the world! What do you think?? Cheers, Leahrose xoxo

For me

For me after the pork, apples and peppers I would go for celery, grapes and cheese (either a French cheese or a lovely English cheese), OH would have to have oatcakes as well as the celery and grapes. Or perhaps a chocolate pot if feeling extra indulgent!!

Hi Leahrose

Super idea. What's in season here?Snowballs!!I am teasing but Minnesota and Canada are a bit icey still. But we always get good bananas,so something with dark chocolate might do.I really do think seasonal items are great. It is summer in Australia and flowers are peeking up in England. The Pork Chops with Apples is in Mireille's cookbook.I will be on the road back from LA with my sister on the first Sunday in March.I will be excited to check on how it turned out.I will be part of the third Sunday.Cheers to you.Jean
