Longchamps Le Pliable
Mireille talks about Longchamps purses--never seen one. Does anyone own one and can explain what the appeal is? Is there a reasonably priced substitute? A description of what one is like would be helpful. Merci beaucoup!

Are the Longchamps bags water resistant?
I have seen quite a few well dressed ladies on my way in to the office carrying the Longchamp bags. I must admit I am quite taken by them, but I am interested to know, if anyone owns one, how waterprof are they?malkan

Longchamps Pliable are water resistant
Hi Lillybo - My Longchamps Pliable backpack (purple) was worn on consecutive rainy days over a week in Alaska ....the things inside did not get wet! Enjoy!Ava

I have a few of these
and have never had a problem with anything inside ever getting wet. They are terrific bags - I call them 'Le sac magic'!meneia

Durability
My only complaint is that mine is already starting to look worn, and I haven't had it that long. I guess they're not designed to be taken to mine sites and thrown in the back of utes... Definitely haven't had problems with things inside getting wet though.Lillybo

Thanks Ava and Meneia, that has helped me to make a decision, the only problem I have now is deciding which colour and size to go for!Ava
POSTED: Fri, 08/05/2011 - 3:31pm
Hi Lillybo,
I have a dark brown one for everyday (brown seems to camouflage the marks that accummulate from general use), and the others I have are all black ... used whenever I travel - even in the UK (black is also a good colour to 'hide' marks).I bought the brown one at the airport just before we did our around the world trip last year and it was the perfect hand luggage (it took the weight of my laptop and books as well as on board essentials ... though I also had a small carry on suitcase with all my clothes etc in. I would empty the brown bag when we reached our destination - hang my clothes up, then use my small case to lock valuables & my laptop away - the brown le pliage would then act as my handbag / beachbag / spare carrier. Travelling around the world with hand luggage was a challenge but absolutely worth it - especially not to have to wait at each terminal for our cases to off load. We never put items in the hold no matter where we fly to. Savvy tips from the French made (and always do make) it easy to pack lightly and yet still have a great many combinations of clothes to wear; bearing in mind we were travelling to super hot climates (such as Dubai, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Hawaii, San Fransisco...and then freezing cold Boston & Blighty - plenty of cool linen clothes and layers of cashmere for the way home!)
Anyhow, I've seen a lovely french-grey one I would like to get when I next see it; and I really do like the bright red and the camel, but think those would mark quite easily. Plenty of colours to choose though! Have fun deciding :-)

Size & Colour
One of the things that affected my decision was the strap length. Some of the bags came with straps that can fit over a shoulder (my preferred way of wearing a bag) whereas some are designed to be worn in the crook of the elbow. I have a dark, slate blue, which works well with my wardrobe.Lillybo

colour
Hello, I was unaware that the bags have different handle sizes, I assumed (wrongly) that they were tote/ grab bags. I am looking for a colour that will match my wardrobe, I went in to Selfridges in London (as I live just outside this excellent city) to take a look at the handle lengths and colours. I am quite taken with the autumnal orange rucksack but suspect I will purchase the grey or dark slate blue medium bag.Vintage1944

So many colours
Jean, London is fabulous, especially now when summer is beginning to turn in to autumn. Which corner of the globe are you from? I am going to go for the bag in orange as it is so autumnal and mixes in well with scarlett which is the predominant colour in my wardrobe (not to mention the theme colour at our wedding), I was tempted to get the navy. There is also a new version of these bags, which I found whilst surfing the Longchamp website, and the leather handles are dyed to match the colour of the body of the bag. I will be adding that to my Christmas wish list!Vintage1944

Hello Lillybo
I live in Canada,Ottawa ,Ontario to be exact. There is a shop nearby that sells the Longchamps Le Pliage at a earth shaking cost.BUT,I am so thrilled I just bought one on Ebay, from France. It is cream coloured and the handle matches.Might be one of those you describe. Can't wait to get it.And I hear on the grapevine here, that I will be getting an Hermes scarf for my birthday. My sister got it on eBay,as well.Since my birthday is in less than a month,I am eager for it.Delighted you are getting the orange one.It will go well with scarlett.Navy would be good too.Maybe your second one ?Scarlett is bold and rich.Enjoy your new bag.OXO

Have you tried eBay?
I purchased a Longchamps Le Pliable (size large in Eggplant) direct from France with tags attached for $130 Canadian. Now that I have it and have been using it, this is my "go to" bag for day-to-day use.Vintage1944

Yesterday I saw a Le Pliable knock-off in a boutique in Montreal,at a very reasonable price. The same thing, missing only the logo.I almost bought it and then saw a really chic bag by a Canadian Designer and got that at a super discount. Her line is called Concubine and she is from Montreal.JeanMarilyn
