how do you wear scarves
My favorite scarf trick is called a weave (best done with an oblong scarf). It is very pretty with a chunky scarf in cold weather and because it is a flat knot you can also wear a shorter silky scarf tied this way tucked under a polo neck top (my favorite) for spring and summer. Here is a demonstration vid. It is the 3rd demonstration. Hope everyone is having a great day!Vintage1944

Scarves on the road
A tale from my never ending road trip.We had stopped at an Information Center in New Mexico and I heard "She's one of us"I looked up to see two women smiling at me,both wearing attractive scarves and one said "The scarf!"showing me hers.I was wearing my lovely mauve one.As they walked away,I noticed how the addition of an attractive scarf made a simple, classic outfit look so chic.OXOKimberly

Oh Jean....
Merci for spreading your Frenchness across the us. Inspiring people across the nation. I didn't know we had a secret scarf clyb but apparently yes. I am always wearing scarves now, even when I consider my dress casual. It just adds something. I love it. So glad to hear about your moment during the trip. Kimberly T.Vintage1944

Good Morning Kimberly
You know I almost asked those women if they were FWDGF devotees. They had the French vibe going on,classic slacks, tees, great haircuts, and of course the scarves. It is nice to be part of a Secret Scarf Club. There is fashion work to be done out here.We are going into downtown Des Moines later and I hope to see people better dressed, than I have seen.I know I am critical, but football shirts, baseball caps and other scary clothing items are de rigeur out here. Not unlike where I live. It's not that people don't care(there was a steady stream of women at the salon where we got our pedicure)It is that they don't know,I believe.OK fashion Rant over. Thanks for putting up with me.OXO JeanKimberly

Scarves instead of hairbands
I don't know if this belongs in this topic, but do any of you ladies know where I can buy the type of scarves to wear in place of a hairband? I don't like the material bands that are all one piece (the don't stay put) but want a scarf that I can tie underneath the back of my hair. More of like they wore in the 60's? Does that make sense? I had 2 but have lost them one of the times I moved. Merci! PattyVintage1944

reply to Nya Nya's question
I had to jump into this one....I wear hats almost daily. I love them. In summer I do to keep the sun off my face. In winter I both love the look and the warmth. I also wear scarves around my head. Here are my thoughts: 1. hats and scarves are no different than everything else it is what works for your face and body (I don't do well with square hats, I'm great with round ones) 2. I like to take scarves and cross them around my head and tuck in ends. Again works with my face and hair, also feels good. 3. Practice a lot at home, It is scary to try new looks in public, so play with them at home, then try them in small short doses out in public. JasmineVintage1944

Headscarves
OK - I'm dying to wear scarves on my head (think Grace Kelly), but I'm apparently too much of a whimp :) Nobody does it here except Muslims and very old ladies even though I think it's wonderful and glamorous. I'm 24 so I'd really turn heads and I'm not THAT confident. So... do any of you ladies ever wear scarves to cover their heads/hair?Sheri

Please do so
Nya Nya- 1st - Thanks for your encouragement on eating for pleasure. Now to the head scarf...I enjoyed a "hat phase" through college and early 20's. I enjoy the memory and the pictures. If you want to wear them, do so. You are a confident, wonderful, and glamorous woman. Enjoy it.Ava

I do! But for a reason...to keep the sun off my face / head when I don't have a hat handy. I usually wear a scarf around my neck anyway to save the decolletage area having too much sun. Sometimes, if I don't have a hat handy, I'll wear the scarf over my head with the ends over my shoulders - this can go one of two ways! You can either look mysterious & Grace Kelly like (especailly with large sunnies on) or you look like you're wearing a hijab (which in their own right are great but I am not a muslim and therefore shouldn't look like one!)I do get some strange looks sometimes (mostly from my wonderful other who will pass a comment ranging from 'Ok Grace Kelly, let's go!' to 'why are you wearing a hijab?'. Either way, if the scarf is doing its job and protecing my skin...I don't care too much what anyone else thinks...at least I know I won't be old and wrinkly like crepe paper! Ava X

Why not?
Go for it.The Queen of England wears Hermes on her head, looks regal. Also, think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's.I used to wear them.Maybe I will again.Have fun.At 24 you can carry it off,no problem.Nya_Nya

I'm still a whimp!
Perhaps I should wait till I own a Hermes :D Or the height of summer - than I can blame it on the sun and trying to protect my skin/hair/head.Ava
POSTED: Mon, 05/24/2010 - 9:04am
You don't need an Hermes for this!
Any scarf will do! You can get some fantastic scarves on the high street that look more expensive than they are - it's the way you wear them & what you mix with them that count. Forget what other people think - and do what 'you' want to do! Be bold, be brave, be yourself. Be your own style council and look classicly elegant amongst the sea of the same old, same old 'fashion lemmings'. Well, at least that's what I do and I feel great for it. I think people often wish they had the nerve to wear things the way I do...stylishly, classically, elegantly...(ok, so this is what I tell myself at any rate! And it works :-)Ava XNya_Nya

Thank you, Ava. That was
Thank you, Ava. That was really inspiring. Summer is starting and I will leave my hat at home on purpose sometimes, so I can wear a headscarf - if I don't have a hat and the sun is beating down I will have no excuse but to wear it! It's great that you are able to wear what you like without caring what the others think - I'm sure you are quite a fashion leader :) Do you live in a big town?Vintage1944

Dearest Whimp
You could start a fashion trend!Or pick a cool, misty day and protect your hair etc.then.I recall wearing scarves on my head on days like that.Recently,I saw, somewhere(excuse the Senior Moment)a young woman with a scarf tied around her head, like a headband, with the ends tied in a lovely bow at the front. Was it on The Sartorialist website?Shall check.I thought, how adorably chic, now and retro at the same time.Vintage1944
