Help with hair dye??
Help!! I've developed an allergy to hair dye! This is an actual catastrophe for me.
I might be 53, but I'm not ready to go gray. My real hair color is snow, snow, white.
I've been a medium brown with blonde highlights for the last 3 or 4 years, and I like the color.
I just can't (and don't want to) have white hair. It doesn't even go with my skin tone. White hair brings out a nasty purple undertone in my skin.
Does anyone know about natural hair dyes? Do they work? Will they cover stubborn gray?

Grey is the new cool...
Thanks for the link, Ava. I've noticed more and more grey/white hair in mainstream ads and entertainment. Even Lady GaGa had grey hair, for a day or two anyway... lol. She changes her look every half hour, it seems.snorklee

Project Gray still underway
Hi Ladies,I'm almost there. I have about an inch of brown at the ends left, and the rest is gray. But it didn't turn out like I thought it would. I thought I would be pure white like my sister and brother, but I'm not! It's salt and pepper with some very interesting black streaks. So... bottom line.... I don't know what I was so stressed about a year and a half ago. I'm happy with how it turned out. Plus, I've bought the coolest little clip-in blue and purple extensions, so anytime I want a streak of color, I clip those in. lol.

Me too funily enough
I have been feeling low recently (see facebook message Jean) and thought a bit of colour would cheer me up. But having seen a couple of people with disasters decided against it. Can't afford the upkeep anyway on retirement income, have better things to do with my ££s. Glad you are both still with me on the siver path. Take care. xxVintage1944

To dye or not to dye
Hi Jeanne,To tell the truth, if I hadn't been allergic, I would never have known what my gray looked like, because I probably never would have stopped dying it. But, since my body had other plans, I'm really starting to appreciate not having to go through the bother and expense of touching up the roots all the time. I'm saving about $900.00 a year, and I have a lot more free time.
But, I've also noticed that very few women actually let themselves be their natural hair color at our age. It takes a certain sense of bravado to be gray in a Clairol world, but what fun to be different, right?

Nature
has a wise way of directing us. To be ones authentic self does take bravado and attitude,to be that person.Yes,it is fun to be different.OXO Jeansnorklee

Update...
Hi all, just checking in... Well, it's been a while and I'm still sloooooooooowly going gray. It's not bad. I still have some faded brown ends, but here's the perplexing part. I'm getting compliments on my "blonde" hair. My hair must have a yellowish cast to it or something. In certain light it looks platinum blonde or blondish with funky highlights... I guess. Although in the harsh light of my hairdresser's shop, it's really, truly white. I can't explain this phenomenon. But, since I'm destined to never dye again, I'll just have to go with it. lol.~Cheers~

Shampoo for Grey
I use a special shampoo for grey hair about once a month. It gets rid of any yellowing and product build up. I don't know if it is available in the US but it is L'Oreal Professional Silver. It's purple and you have to wash your hands very carefully afterwards unless you want a blue tinge to your nails!!! It's not a dye and leaves your hair really shiney.snorklee

Silver and blue :)
Hi Marilyn, and Jeanne, I might try some of those products eventually, but I also have to be careful about most hair products, because I'm allergic to alot of them. I can't use most styling products, and there are only a few shampoos and conditioners that don't make me break out in a rash. The older I get, the more allergic to most beauty products I've become. Most face washes and moisturizers also make me break out. I've gradually found that simple triple milled or French milled bar soap is the only thing I can use on my face. It's a godsend that my skin is naturally oily, because I don't know what I would do if I had to use a moisturizer.Vintage1944

I use Klorane Silverhighlights Shampoo withcentaurea extract for white or grey hair.It can be used daily,if need be.Not sure if it is available in GB or the US.Nya_Nya

Great pic!
If that's you in the picture you look great. Grey and white hair look great anyway. Just think Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada - women actually dye their hair whitish-gray, so why not embrace it?! I know I won't dye my hair as soon as it turns gray enough - just in the beginning to avoid being too multicolored :)snorklee

Thanks!
That is the real me, from about a week ago. Thank you for the nice compliment. :) I'm still waiting for it all to be grown out, but it's not as bad as I thought... and I like that I'm saving almost a thousand dollars a year in salon appointments and I don't have to spend 3 hours getting dyed, every 5 weeks just to keep my roots from showing.snorklee

Getting grayer
I'm not 100% gray yet, but I'm getting there.... slooooooowly. :) It's been a little over a year since I first posted this thread, and I'm not completely grown out yet. Still some brown ends. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. A few more months and the transformation will be complete.Celtic Owl

Have you read the book
Have you read the book Amazing Grays? It cheered me that my lack of willingness to color-change nature's choice is right for me and so many others. Hairdressers get re-routed quickly to the way it is. My sister lost all her hair, from chemo and was soooo grateful it grew back in at all and to our delight it is the most beautiful silver! She wears it super short, so chic! alas the cut didn't translate as well for me, so I am growing the length out. She changed from autumn wardrobe to winter and it looks so good on her. so you may find that clothes change as well as jewelry. A good excuse to find new clothes!MrsKoller

Going gray as well...
Fortunately mine is coming in an awesome silver and white. Right now it is just around my forehead with a slight concentration just above my ears so I am getting this kinda cool streak. So much so, I stopped dying because I like it. I do keep it conditioned because gray hair is drier and at the edges where mine is causes a few dry patches on my forehead, but I moisturize that as well. It could be worse - I could be going bald like my fiance. Poor dear, he wears hats all the time. However, a residual effect of my re-styling based on FWDGF, he has bought a fedora which looks fabulous on him rather than his usual baseball cap. Gives him a totally different look. So me in my scarves and him in his fedora. I like it. Anyway, I am taking a wait and see approach towards my gray.
