I am in need of something to read.

Mademoiselles, I apologise if this question has already been asked in another thread. I am suffering from "readers" block and I have been searching for something France related to read. A few books have caught my eye, in particular I was tempted by books written Karen Wheeler, Helen Frith-Powell and Sarah Turnball. So I was wondering what books would you recommend I should read? Thanks in advance x

Debra Ollivier for Lillybo

Some of her books are What French Women Know and A Woman's Guide to Finding Her Inner French Girl. Also check out out thread What Are You Reading. Lots of wonderful ideas! Happy Searching! xo MJ

A Year in Provence

Have you read any of the books by Peter Mayle? He is a delightful writer. Very witty. I would lie in bed and giggle about his experiences. His follow-up books are Toujours Provence and Encore Provence. I also enjoyed Chocolat by Joanne Harris. Sherie

All You Need To Be Impossibly French

I thought this book was fun, but not nearly as informative as Entre Nous or What French Women Know. I actually only really enjoyed the very first chapter when she spoke of her father's friend who told her all she needed to be french were two lipsticks and a lover. I thought that part was rather charming since it came from a little girl's memory or someone she admired. But the rest of the book was a little frivolous. I am sure not all french women have affairs. It seemed to streotype them as unsavory women.

I agree with you

I liked the first chapter, then I found it rather silly. Maybe I am a closet french woman because I do hover around two shade groups on my lip gloss and my lover is my fiance and I love to flirt with him. He blushes, the big teddy bear.

The Book: All You Need to be Impossibly French

Bonjour Frenchy: I recall I did read this book, but as I recall I didn't really like it all that much. As I recall, it encouraged women to be flirts, dress sexy and have affairs. For this reason, I believe I thought the author was way off.

Bonjour Violette

I'm sorry you didn't care for the book. I had to giggle over much of it and where I could I applied the practices with my husband who was taken quite by surprise (happily I might add). I'm not an affair kind of girl myself but I enjoyed flirting with my hubby. Do you have a pick for a new book talk? I'm looking forward to it. Deborah

Frenchy: have you read "Foreign Tongue"? or "Entre Nous"?

For a novel: I simply adored "Foreign Tongue" by Vanina Marsot, a new author. It was wonderful! Then if you haven't read "Entre Nous" by Debra Ollivier, it is a wealth of info.

I have

Entre Nous and read it whilst reading the other. I have a habit of having 3 or 4 going at the same time. I like to keep one fiction and one non-fiction going at the same time. Here are a few more titles that you may not have read yet: Paris in Mind, wonderful book, I cannot say enough. True Pleasures: A Memoir of Women in Paris, again...fantastic. Sixty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong, so eye opening. What French Women Know, gave me more to think about a practice. The first two are a series of essays by various authors. I highly recommend them.

Book talk?

Any book talk going on at the moment? As it is a new year, it would perhaps be nice to start reading a new book! Or are you all too busy to read..?

A novel will be great!

Yes, a novel would be great! Perhaps a classic of some kind?

And yes, reading is always a pleasure, I just never get tired of bookworming :-) I always have a book that I read between classes (at campus), a different one for reading in the evening and usually also a third one which I read when I'm bored or anything alike. So I'm ALWAYS up for reading! lol

Lovely reading

I am thinking of two possibilities.....a Jane Austen "Mansefield Park" or "The Elegance of the Hedgehog".What do you suggest? Is there a particular author you like ?I am always up for something new.

When I visited the Morgan Library and Museum(a dream place for a reader/book lover)there was an exhibit of Jane Austen's letters, which JP Morgan had collected. It prompted more interest in her.But as I said,I am open to suggestion.

Anybody else care to join us?Please do.Jean

I vote

for either one. I have them both. Are there any other suggestions out there? I just bought the new Elizabeth Kostova novel The Swan Thieves. She is the author of The Historian which was fantastic...even my husband loved it. This one has to do with French Impressionism art. I love Jane Austin! She is a huge favorite of mine. You all decide and I will jump on board. Hugs! Deborah
